Welcome to the Summer 2007 Congolese Dance and Drum Cam!

On behalf of MaRegine, TaMbemba, and our elder MaBoukaka, welcome to the Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop. We all look forward to dancing and playing music with you.

Here is some more detailed information about the camp.

 

Registration

Each year we update the Workshop mailing list. Please make sure we have your current address. We are trying to use email whenever possible, so be sure to give us your email address too. If you know of anyone who would like to be added to or deleted from our mailing list, please let Cai know.  Before you leave camp, we would appreciate your feedback regarding the Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop. Have a safe journey!

Initial check-in and registration begins in the afternoon on Friday, July 20th.

Please observe the following registration procedures:

First- Register and pay tuition at the Office in the main hall.

Second-Locate your sleeping or camping spot, and notify the Office of your choice.

Third-Please wear your daily registration band to all classes and meals.

Rules of the Pliocene Ridge School

Our contract with the school contains certain requirements that we all must meet as a condition of our use of  the school.  We ask your cooperation in following these rules in order to make the camp a good experience for all and to allow our continued use of the facilities:

  • No alcohol, illegal substances, or non-prescription drugs may be brought on or used at the facility
  • No domestic animals are permitted anywhere on the Pliocene Ridge School grounds
  • There can be no fires, candles, or incense on the school grounds.
  • Smoking is not permitted on school grounds

Schedule

The tentative daily schedule for the workshop is:

7:30-8:30 Breakfast
8:30-9:30 Drum classes, three levels
9:30-11:30 Dance class, beginning level
11:00-12:30 Dance class, advanced level
2:30-3:30 Kisansi, Voice and Bell classes, Children's Dance class
3:30-4:30 Drum classes, three levels
5:00-7:00 Dance class, all levels
7:00-7:30 Yoga class
7:30-8:30 Dinner
9:00- Mbongi

Things Things to bring

  • Tent
  • Air mattress or foam pads
  • Sleeping bag, sheets, blankets, and pillows
  • Warm clothing for evenings
  • Swimming gear if desired
  • Flashlight
  • Walking shoes
  • Cup or coffee mug, water bottle
  • Towels
  • Several changes of dance clothes
  • Tennis or dance shoes
  • Toiletries
  • First-aid supplies (vitamin C and E, arnica,echinachea, Band-Aids, athletic tape,aspirin)
  • Change for the pay phones (cell phones do not work in this area)
  • Drums and all varieties of other percussion and musical instruments
  • Artwork, clothing, jewelry,oils, etc. to trade or sell at the marketplace

Directions to Pliocene Ridge School

From the Bay Area

From Sacramento

  1. Take Hwy 80 East to Auburn
  2. Go North on Hwy 49 North to Grass Valley/Nevada City --  approx 26 miles
  3. Just past Nevada City, Hwy 49 North takes a sharp left toward North San Juan and Downieville, while 20 continues straight to Lake Tahoe. Take the sharp left on Hwy 49N.
  4. Go north on Hwy 49N for 13.9 miles to the town of North San Juan.
  5. Proceed through the small town area, stay on Hwy 49N for 2.6 miles to the Middle Yuba Bridge.
  6. Stay on Hwy 49N and go another 1.7miles from the bridge to the Ridge Road turn off.
  7. Go Right on Ridge Road.  (sign says "Pike 4 miles, Alleghany 19 miles).  Follow this road for 5.6 miles.
  8. Pliocene Ridge School will be on your left, close to Ridge Road.
  9. You will be greeted by the Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop hosts
