Congolese Dance and Drum Spring Workshop

February 27 - March 9, 2009

Camp Keanae on the north shore of beautiful Maui

Below you will find information on:

Mbote (Greetings)

The next spring workshop will again be held at Camp Keanae, Maui and we look forward to seeing you there!

This camp has a large dance hall with an excellent wood floor, a complete kitchen and indoor dining area.

Drawing of Village

Our contract contains certain requirements that we all must meet as a condition of our use of  the facility.  We ask your cooperation in following these rules in order to make the camp a good experience for all:

  • No alcohol, illegal substances, or non-prescription drugs may be brought on or used at the facility.
  • No domestic animals are permitted anywhere on the grounds.
  • There can be no fires, candles, or incense on the grounds.
  • Smoking is not permitted on the grounds.

Dance Classes

The Daily Schedule includes both a beginner and an advanced level dance class every morning, and an extended mixed level class every afternoon.

Dance classes will be held in the gym on a huge wooden floor that is in excellent condition.

Drum Classes

Three levels of Ngoma and Conga drum instruction (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) are given for an hour each morning and for an hour each afternoon. Simple skills tests will help students assess the right class for them.

  • The criteria for the intermediate class are the ability to create clear base, tone, and slap sounds with both right and left hands, and stay on the beat.
  • The criteria for the advanced class are the ability to make the full vocabulary of drum sounds consistently and be able to hold a 6/8 bell pattern steadily.
Likembe & Song

There is instruction in likembe (kalimba and mbira) and Congolese-style singing offered in the early afternoon each day.

Kalimbas will be available for use in classes and for purchase.

Vacationing

You may attend the workshop solely for relaxation and vacation.

You can share in the African village atmosphere, eating Congolese-style food or vegetarian meals, without taking the classes.

A massage therapist will be available for a separate fee.

Kindezi (Child Care)

There are supervised creative activities for toilet trained and older children every morning and afternoon so that parents may attend classes knowing that their children are well taken care of.

We do craft projects, nature walks, supervised playground  activities, creative building projects, and special dance and music classes for the children.

Housing

Large grassy fields overlooking the ocean are available for tent camping. Indoor accommodations are available for about 50 people. Bunk beds and matresses are provided. It is very important that you bring your own bedding.

There are shared bathrooms and showers with plenty of  hot water.

Meals

We serve three great meals a day. You will have a daily choice of authentic Congolese food and a choice of terrific vegetarian and often vegan entrees. Congolese food, which often includes meat entrees, are prepared by MaBoukaka, Nancy and Matingou.

There is an indoor eating area and an outdoor patio for dining.

Marketplace

There is an area set aside for the buying and selling of goods associated with African music, dance, and culture.

Cloth, carvings, jewelry and music CD’s will be available for sale. The vendor fee information will be available soon.

Kalimbas will be available from the Camp, as will camp T-shirts.

Vendors are asked to bring their own folding table for displaying wares.

Information on the marketplace vendor fee will be available soon.
