Malonga Casquelourd: In loving memory of a great artist and leader
Malonga Casquelourd died on Sunday, June 16, when a drunk driver smashed into
his car. Malonga was a distinguished African choreographer, dancer, master
drummer and singer who influenced hundreds of dancers. He founded and directed
the African performing company Fua Dia Congo. Here some people share their
thoughts on Malonga.
Javier B. Pacheco, cultural director for Acción Latina: “I first
met Malonga Casquelourd sometime around 1976 when I began to get involved (as
pianist and poet) in arts programs at the San Mateo County Arts Council. It
was at a business luncheon that a small group of multicultural artists (myself
included) were being introduced to the mostly white patrons. I remember Malonga
coming out with a huge glow on his face and a drum which he used to demonstrate
some dynamic rhythms from the Congo (Zaire). I was immediately impressed by
his energy and goodwill.
Despite his limited English, he got the audience to participate in the music
making while he danced. He had an uncanny ability to delight the crowd.
Thereafter, Malonga and I shared the stage several more times.
Years later when I ran into him again, he was coaching an outstanding group
of committed dancers in East Palo Alto. He taught some years in the Black
Studies Department at SFSU and we would also rub shoulders from time to
time. His death is a great loss for the dance community and the public
in general. Malonga was a true gem of a human being and a great artist.
Josephine Morada, artistic director of Academicos da Estrada Real performing
company: “Malonga was one of the greatest teachers, dancers and leaders
in our community. His boundless energy and positive spirit have been an
inspiration to many of us in the dance community. I will always remember
his kindness and belief in me when I started dancing and throughout the
years. His artistic contributions, his knowledge, talent and spirit will
be greatly missed but for those touched by his energy, his magic, his humanity,
he lives on in our dancing and drumming.”
A drumming event to honor Malonga’s passing is scheduled for Thursday,
June 19 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Alice Arts Center, 1428 Alice St., Oakland.
